Free fun in downtown Seattle
Posted on

Looking to spend a downtown day on a budget? We’ve got you covered. From arts and culture to outdoor fun, there’s a wide variety of free and low-cost activities around downtown Seattle to keep your whole family—and your wallet—happy!
Stroll through Pike Place Market
As one of the oldest continuously operating public markets in the country, Pike Place Market is an icon of Seattle for good reason. Meander through the stalls of shops, restaurants and antique dealers, enjoy some free samples and watch fresh fish fly through the air. And for the ultimate “only in Seattle” experience, pay a visit to the infamous Gum Wall.
Explore a downtown park
Seattleites are fortunate to have a number of walkable parks and public spaces located throughout downtown. Admire the unique brutalist architecture of Freeway Park, let loose at Seattle Center’s Artists at Play Playground or enjoy waterfront views at Lake Union Park.

Get on the water at Center for Wooden Boats
South Lake Union is also home to Center for Wooden Boats, a hidden gem for outdoor fun in downtown offering multiple free programs. Join in on monthly public sails, bring the kids for storytime and toy boat building, or grab a free one-hour rowboat rental at the floating boatshop.
Browse a bookstore
Seattle has a wide variety of bookstores dotted throughout downtown for readers of all ages to dive into their new favorite book. There are too many to list them all here, but some of our favorites include Elliott Bay Book Company and Twice Sold Tales in Capitol Hill, Kinokuniya and Mam’s Books in Chinatown-International District, Open Books: A Poem Emporium in Pioneer Square, and BLMF Literary Saloon in Pike Place Market. And don’t forget to explore Central Library, the 11-story flagship building of Seattle Public Library filled with over a million books!

Visit a downtown museum
Speaking of the library: did you know you can visit many Seattle-area museums for free, thanks to your library card? Seattle Public Library and King County Library System both allow cardholders to reserve free admission to MOHAI, MoPOP, Seattle Art Museum, Seattle Aquarium and more. Don’t have a library card? Many downtown museums participate in free First Thursdays, and Frye Art Museum and Olympic Sculpture Park are always free!

Experience arts and culture
If you’re looking for even more artistic and creative experiences, pay a visit to one of downtown’s many Art Walks. Pioneer Square’s First Thursday Art Walk was the first in the nation, and has since been joined by other downtown neighborhoods including Belltown, Capitol Hill and more. For fans of live theater, many local theaters also offer pay-what-you-can performances, including Seattle Rep, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Seattle Opera and Union Arts Center.
And don’t forget about the numerous free events and activities produced by DSA/MID! From architecture tours to concerts to fitness classes, there’s always something free and fun happening in downtown. Get more details on DSA/MID’s current programming at downtownseattle.org.
